these aren't lakes

it's strange to watch the rice-field-growing-process around here. now it's the season of planting and, which means that all the fields are thoroughly flooded to prepare the soil (or something, i'm just pretending to know what i'm talking about). it's gives the illusion of living on an island, or living in the wetlands at least. the water everywhere is probably less than a foot deep. the elderly farmers slosh around in tall rubber boots moving rocks around as the water seeps in, one level at a time.
really, it's pretty fascinating. the downside though is that with standing water comes bugs. with bugs comes a foreshadowing of what i have been told is the worst aspect of korea: the summer mosquitoes. i can hardly wait.
